HP's Omen 30L series is a gaming PC for those who don't want to build their own gaming PC. Assembling your own system may be a daunting prospect (and buying depleted uranium now is easier than buying a new graphics card), but fortunately HP supports you with a variety of possible specifications tailored to you Game console.

Naturally, this means that the Omen 30L (no matter what configuration you buy) works like any professionally assembled home-made gaming PC. Want to upgrade the new components later? This is a breeze. Install custom software? no problem. We will dive into the details of the specifications later, but all Omen 30L models are serious game consoles, sharing the same metal and tempered glass smooth chassis.

This shows that HP is taking their pre-built machines seriously, and obviously doing a lot of work to make the 30L the best gaming PC competitor. But can it really be on par with the competition? Is it really worth the high asking price? Let us find out.

The following are the PC specifications sent to GamesRadar for review: Processor: Intel Core i7-10700K Graphics: RTX 2080 Super RAM: 16GB DDR4 HyperX Fury @ 3,200MHz Storage: 512GB WD Black M.2 PCIe SSD (boot) 2TB 7200RPM SATA hard drive port: Front: 2 USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, 3.5mm microphone, 3.5mm combo headset/microphone; Rear: 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, 2x USB- A 2.0, 1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x2, HD audio, Ethernet, 1x DisplayPort, 1x HDMI, 1x Virtual Link USB-C connection: 2.5G LAN, WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5 Dimensions (HxWxD): 16.61” x 6.5” x 17.05” / 421 x 165 x 433mm

Omen 30L is a gorgeous piece of hardware right out of the box. In terms of size, it is fairly medium, far from compact, but not as big as some gaming-oriented cases. One side panel is clear glass, showing the internal components, while the other is solid aluminum.

On the front, we have another glass panel, although this panel is colored to silence the brightness of the RGB intake fan installed near the base. Above it is the "OMEN" font and the brand's iconic diamond logo, which are also illuminated in matching RGB. Compared to many other pre-built PCs, it is surprisingly subtle; the remaining RGB lighting is limited to a single LED strip on the top of the housing, a bright square on the CPU cooler block, and RGB HyperX Fury RAM (optional additional features).

This is a good case; many pre-built sellers use cases from other manufacturers, and HP is committed to its own style, which is a good choice. The 30L chassis also provides excellent ventilation; large perforated metal plates extend on both sides of the front, and the fixed top plate is also ventilated. There are dust filters hidden underneath, although cleaning with these filters can be a chore.

Fortunately, the guts to achieve this build will not be a problem. A large, user-friendly button on the rear of the case will pop up a glass window, giving you free access to most components for upgrades or maintenance. On the front and back of the case, we have various I/O ports for physical connection (the front USB-C port was originally a good choice, but it is not destructive because there are two that can be found in the back) .

Internally, we have a highly customizable selection of parts. Our evaluation unit contains an RTX 2080 Super GPU and an Intel Core i7-10700K CPU; both are now the previous generation parts, but considering it is difficult to know where to buy RTX 3080 or where to buy RTX 3070 stock, for example, at the price point This is a fairly fair deal. With a total of 2.5TB of storage space and 16GB of high-speed memory, this Omen 30L is guaranteed to still have an impact. If you want to spend more for better performance, you can also use models equipped with RTX 3000 series GPUs and various other components.

If we have a key criticism of the design of the 30L, it will not boil down to the choice of aesthetics or available components. The RGB light strip hidden behind the windowed panel makes the internal components clear. Unfortunately, in some places, the wiring work could have been neater. We also hope that there is some kind of PSU shield here; Cooler Master's exposed non-modular power bricks are not good-looking, with a bunch of information labels printed on them.

In any case, this is not catastrophic-this reviewer has assembled some messier systems in the past-but buying a pre-installed PC can ensure that the wiring work is as tidy as possible, and this is not exactly the case here. Several cables were squeezed awkwardly into harmless corners, and a crumpled black fabric tape fixed an audio cable to the top of the case for no reason.

In terms of pre-installed software, Omen 30L is equipped with Windows 10 or 11 Home. Fortunately, there is only a small amount of British media reports software on the drive. Some of them are worth keeping (such as the existing RGB control software and the GeForce Experience application), but thankfully, the rest are not too difficult to remove.

How does HP Omen 30L perform in certain industry tests? We have listed these below to let you know its performance.

3DMark Firestrike: 22915 3DMark Firestrike Extreme: 14066 3DMark Firestrike Ultra: 7895 3DMark Port Royal: 6684 PC Mark 10: 5922 Cinebench R15 (index): 2106 CrystalDiskMark: SSD: 1718MB/s read; 1547MB/s write Metro Exodus: 4K High: 55fps; 4K RTX: 26fps; 1440p high: 91fps; 1440p RTX: 51fps; 1080p high: 108fps; 1080p RTX: 68fps The Division 2: High 4K: 73fps; Ultra 4K: 52fps; High 1440p: 136fps; Ultra 1440p: 101fps; High 1080p: 155fps; Ultra 1080p: 134fps Total War: Three Kingdoms: High 4K: 50fps; Ultra 4K: 32fps; High 1440p: 96fps; Ultra 1440p: 67fps; High 1080p: 130fps; Ultra 1080p: 95fps Tomb Raider Shadow of Shadow: 4K High: 59fps; 4K High: 70fps; 1440p High: 104fps; 1440p High: 113fps; 1080p High: 122fps; 1080p High: 130fps Red Dead Redemption 2: Highest Setting: 4K: 45fps; 1440p: 64fps; 1080p: 99fps; default setting: 4K: 49fps; 1440p: 69fps; 1080p: 108fps

Regardless of appearance, how does this Omen 30L perform? Well, we are happy to report that although 2080 Super has been more than two years old, it can still be completed. This GPU is the monster of 1440p games and can handle your own games in 4K in most games. It may be difficult for demanding 3A games to maintain above 60fps at 4K super resolution, but e-sports games perform very well. In most games, slightly lowering the graphics settings will allow 4K resolutions above 60 frames per second.

Compared to the newer 3080, the only real disadvantage of the 2080 Super is real-time ray tracing performance. Activating ray tracing in supported games that use 3000 series cards will slightly affect the frame rate, but doing so on the 2080 Super will drop your fps by as much as 50%. We have seen this in Metro Exodus and 3DMark's Port Royal RTX benchmark tests. As the great philosopher Thanos once said, "This ray has caused a heavy price." At least, we are pretty sure he was talking about "Thunder."

As mentioned earlier, the Omen 30L case is well ventilated and adopts a smart fan layout to ensure good airflow. Although the rear fan is small, the exhaust airflow at the back of the case feels strong. Throughout the test, we did not see any disturbing component temperatures, although we did notice a little fan buzzing during the heavy processor load test, which, as expected, appeared to come from the AIO CPU heatsink fan. However, some BIOS adjustments to the fan curve may correct this.

Fan noise aside, the Core i7 CPU actually performs well. It maintains a high frame rate in CPU-dependent games such as Total War: Three Kingdoms, a strategy game, and powers core-intensive workloads such as the Cinebench R15 benchmark. .

What is not so impressive is the speed of our SSD; the transfer speed of this 512GB M.2 drive cannot exceed 2GB/s, although the results we get are still very fast (the loading time of most games is fast), but with The 5 GB/s drive is now readily available. In fact, this will not have much impact on the game, and it is still much faster than the 2TB hard drive used for secondary storage here, so make sure your game is installed on an SSD.

Of course, there is a lot of upgrade potential here, which does not necessarily mean removing existing components. If you need more high-speed storage, there is an empty drive bay for expansion and a spare heat shield covering the second M.2 SSD slot. You may buy two more 8GB HyperX RAMs to fill the two empty DIMMs, but since Kingston recently acquired the Fury memory brand and subsequently separated, you may be upset!

The HP Omen 30L has a beautiful appearance and a bit ugly inside, but it does the job, and then it does some work. A 1440p gaming powerhouse that can expand to 4K games at a critical juncture, at a price of US$1,999, is a reasonable proposition in today's computer market. A quick visit to eBay shows that the new RTX 2080 Super will currently cost you more than $1,000, which makes Omen 30L an attractive option now. Although it does not have the powerful functions and high-quality features of the RTX 3070 PC, RTX 3080 PC or RTX 3090 PC, it is not a bad choice now.

Of course, if you can buy a new GPU at the actual market price, it may be cheaper to build your own PC overall. However, you will not get a customized Omen housing, which is one of our favorite machine parts. The internal structure may be a bit imperfect in some places, but it is hard to deny that this is an excellent pre-built game system. Keep working hard, HP; next time just leave the tape in the toolbox.
